My story

Whilst studying at Archbishop Temple School I enjoyed studying History, Geography and Religious Education the most.  I have not ended up directly working in any of the fields I studied at school or college, however, I utilise many of them in my role.

I regularly work with people of different faiths and an understanding of religion is important in promoting respect and dignity.  Nurses must work within a legal framework, therefore knowledge of this area of the law is vital.  Maths and English are used daily in terms of medication and documentation.  Having an interest in other areas can also help in building professional relationships with those you are supporting.

After leaving Archbishop Temple School I was still unsure of what direction I wanted to go in and so took some time out from education and eventually found myself working in healthcare.  This contributed to my chosen degree, having never studied psychology before, and MSc course.  Between studying these qualifications, I went travelling for 13 months on my own around East Asia.  I now have friends from different countries who have all contributed to my outlook on life as well.  Travelling allowed me to experience other cultures and ways of life, both through the countries I visited and from others who were also visiting those same places.

I currently work for the NHS as a mental health nurse which I love as I get to meet people from all walks of life who I would never normally meet.  The role is challenging but also very diverse and I have many options of what direction I want to go into within the role as well as training opportunities. This is perfect for me as I can always try something new within the field.  A lot of the positions I am interested in working towards I was not aware of when I left school and I think it’s important to remember that you don’t have to know exactly what you want to do as there are so many different career paths out there.
