We are delighted to announce that author Julian Sedgwick will be joining us on Wednesday 20th March to talk to all pupils in year 9 about his acclaimed novel for children, Tsunami Girl.
Part prose, part manga, Tsunami Girl is a coming-of-age novel set against the unfolding of an unforeseen crisis of colossal scale. Yūki Hara Jones is a quarter Japanese girl growing up in the UK. Troubled at school she travels to stay with her beloved Japanese grandpa on the Fukushima coast, arriving on the eve of the March 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, tsunami and radiation disaster.
The book was written by Julian Sedgwick and illustrated by professional manga artist Chie Kutsuwada.
As part of Julian Sedgwick’s visit to school, pupils will be taking part in cross-curricular learning in science, geography and maths exploring different aspects of the disaster discussed in the book.
Ahead of Julian’s visit, we would encourage all pupils in year 9 to read Tsunami Girl. You may purchase a copy of Tsunami Girl at the discounted price of £5.99 on Scopay. If your son/daughter purchases a book they may also have it signed by the author. There are also copies to borrow in our school library.
We will also be selling Julian Sedgwick’s most recent publication 100 Tales from the Tokyo Ghost Café for the discounted price of £6.59.
