At the start of Maths week, KS3 pupils enjoyed a STEM workshop led by Alan O’Donohoe. Pupils heard about a wide range of topics, from Alan Turing and the Enigma machine to careers linked to the Ministry of Defence and other specialist companies. The sessions had a theme of problem solving, a vital skill for our pupils both in their Maths work and in their future lives. Pupils were challenged, amongst other things, to decipher the rules of a hidden game and to find a systematic way to crack open some padlocks. It was great to hear from such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader in STEM. Some pupils even walked away with a prize from the raffle!
Throughout Maths week, pupils were tasked with spotting Maths outside in the real world. When they did, they were asked to take a photo. There were over 70 brilliant entries to the photo competition, all capturing different aspects of the Maths that we see around us. The Head of Maths had a tough time choosing a winner, but in the end first place was shared between Jayden P and Lydia H, both in Year 7.
Mr Hewitt hosted an estimation challenge in which pupils participated at lunchtime across the week. Pupils needed to use their skills to approximate the number of sweets in a jar. Emily G in Year 9 and Alex J in Year 11 succeeded in making the closest guesses out of all the pupils who took part, and shared the 165 sweets between them.
Pupils took part in a national competition during Maths week, hosted by 10ticks. Points were earned for the school when pupils answered questions correctly in a range of challenges, including Beat the Clock, Perfect 10, and Timed Test. It was a very close race to the top for much of the week between Archbishop and a school based in Lincolnshire. In the end, Archbishop pupils secured a fantastic 1st place after a nail-biting final few days. Well done for all your hard work!
