The History Department ran a competition during October to celebrate Black History Month. We focussed on the national theme of 'Saluting Our Sisters' and pupils were asked to research a black woman in history and to write a poem about her achievements. We believe it is important to pay homage to black women who had, too often, contributions ignored, ideas appropriated and voices silenced. We had poems created on many different women including Rosa Parks, CJ Walker, Shirley Chisholm and Mae Jemison to name a few. Lydia and Hibbaan, in year 7, came 2nd and 3rd and won an Amazon gift voucher and Jewel, in year 8, won the competition and received a gift voucher and David Olusoga's book Black and British: A short, essential history.
