On Friday, we were very fortunate to welcome two second-generation Holocaust survivors to school to talk to all pupils in year 7 and year 9.

Leah Burman and Ernie Hunter from the Northern Holocaust Education Group (NHEG) volunteered their time to tell us about their parents’ survival from Nazi persecution during World War 2.

Year 7 pupils have previously read Tom Palmer's book After the War, the moving true story about the Windermere Boys, and visited the Lake District Holocaust Project in Windermere.

Year 9 pupils are currently studying Jewish Beliefs and Practices in RE and are learning about the Holocaust in History.

Ernie told us about his German non-Jewish father, his sister and his mother's experience. We also found out that Ernie is a distant relative of Albert Einstein and Carl Laemmle, co-founder of Universal Studios.

Leah told us about her father, Ziggy, who was the only survivor of his immediate family. Ziggy is going to be 101 this August and now lives in Israel.

The sessions will, I am sure, have had a profound impact and deepened their understanding.
