On Monday 17th June 2024, Archbishop Temple Mathematics Department held their Primary Team Mathematics Challenge. 7 teams of 4 students from years 5 and 6 battled it out all day in the main hall to be the crowned Maths Challenge Champions 2023-24. Teams from Barton St Lawrence CE Primary School, Broughton-in-Amounderness Church of England Primary School (2 teams), Grimsargh St Michael’s CE Primary School, Lea Endowed Primary School, Sherwood Primary School and St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School all took part in 6 rounds – speed, cross number, group, shuttle, logic and the relay. Each round demanded different skills such as mathematical dexterity, teamwork, communication and tactics, so that maximum points could be scored within the time limit.
Sherwood took an early lead after 2 rounds as we went into the break with a 14 points lead over 2nd place. Sherwood’s consistency and team work paid dividends and they maintained their lead going into the final relay round where some quick running and accurate answers sealed the title. It was an amazing effort from all teams, below are the round winners as well as overall 2nd and 3rd place.
Mr O’Leary, Archbishop Temple’s Head of Mathematics presented medals and a trophy to the winning team. The event would not have been possible without the support of the primary school staff, Mr Slater and most importantly the two Year 9 students Rhea and Tia who supported the mathematics department throughout the event.
